Danica Weager (she/her) was born and raised in Nelson, BC. She is of mixed ancestry. She is a member of Peguis First Nation on her mother's side and has European ancestry on her father's side. She is a proud mama of a youngster and is committed to learning more about her cultural connections. She is deeply grateful to be a visitor in the traditional territories of the Sinixt (Lakes), the Syilx (Okanagan), the Ktunaxa and the Secwépemc (Shuswap) Peoples.
Danica is deeply committed to the empowerment of Indigenous Peoples through post-secondary education. She believes that cultural connections, friendship, community and Elder teachings, traditional health and wellness teachings, and laughter are deeply important tools for student success and community building. Indigenous worldview and holistic teachings are at the core of her practice. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work (Indigenous and Child Welfare Specializations) from the University of Victoria and a Master of Counselling (Counselling Psychology) from the University of Lethbridge. For the past fifteen years, she has mainly worked in a variety of roles in Indigenous education programs in the K-12 public school system. Outside of work, Danica is interested in running (movement is medicine!), reading, beadwork and sewing, practicing culture, learning to skateboard, learning to Jingle Dress dance and spending time with her family. Danica is an ally and supporter of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and is a safe person to speak with.
