“I celebrate teaching that enables transgressions—a movement against and beyond boundaries. It is that movement which makes education the practice of freedom” —bell hooks
I have had the privilege of being a social worker and mental health clinician for the past 20 years. My practice is grounded in compassion, empathy, equality and respect. I have had worked in a variety of settings including homeless shelters, forensic psychiatry, community mental health, crisis response, hospitals and palliative care. I am passionate about addressing the stigma of mental health and substance use by engaging in anti-oppressive practice, deep listening, advocacy and education. I believe my role as an instructor is to create a space for students to learn together in a community that instills compassion, provides hope, fosters critical reflection, and encourages braver. Let’s learn and grow together through courageous conversations, curiosity and hopefully some laughter!
I live outside of Nelson with my partner Cam, our daughter, our dog, our cat and a flock of chickens. I love exploring the Kootenays, hosting friends and family, living room dance parties, finding new swimming holes, watching documentaries and long unplanned road trips. Outside of my love of teaching, I am a lifelong learner. I completed my MSW at the University of Calgary in 2018, am currently taking courses towards my Provincial Instructor Diploma, regularly engage in professional development and continue to work casually to keep up to date with my social work practice.
