Upgrading and expanding facilities to better serve learners and communities
Tenth Street campus residence
In November of 2009, the federal and provincial governments along with the Columbia Basin Trust came together to provide $7 million in funding for the complete renovation of the Nelson Tenth Street campus student residence.
This residence, which has been closed for the last seven years, will provide reasonably priced accommodation for approximately 100 students beginning in the 2011–2012 academic year. The residence, leased from the City of Nelson for a nominal $1.00 per year, will be renovated to certified environmental standards.
HVAC system
Most of the buildings that make up Selkirk College are well over 40 years old and thus require constant attention and repair. The College was able to replace the HVAC system in the main Castlegar campus building thanks to a $1.88 million in funding through the federal Knowledge Infrastructure Project.
Additional funding from the provincial government allowed the College to replace worn out boilers on the Nelson Silver King campus. Both projects will provide students and staff with more comfortable and safe working environments.
Aboriginal Gathering Place
Thanks to a grant of $600,000 from the provincial Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development’s Gathering Places initiative, the College has been given the opportunity to develop an Aboriginal Gathering Place.
The Gathering Place will be located on the Castlegar campus and will make an important contribution to meeting the College’s strategic priority of enhancing services to Aboriginal learners and further developing a welcoming and supportive environment for all Aboriginal students.
It is anticipated that construction will be completed by the spring or early summer of 2011.
