Leadership
A commitment to our communities
Nakusp Learning Centre
The College is committed to building effective and mutually beneficial relationships with our communities. The Village of Nakusp is a community that is very important to Selkirk.
At the Nakusp Learning Centre, programming normally includes courses which are part of the College’s Continuing and Adult Basic Education programs. However, a six-week, full-time Entry-Level Carpentry program recently saw thirteen students learn while constructing a garage for the local high school and working on the community’s Emergency Services Building.
This was truly a case where the students, the community and the College benefitted.
Mir Centre for Peace Lecture Series
The mission of the Mir Centre for Peace is to understand and build cultures of peace through learning. The Centre offers peace-related programming to students and a lecture series. It is through the lecture series that students, college staff and members of the community come together.
In 2009–2010, the College announced the launch of a campaign to establish an endowment, the revenue from which would supplement the cost of attracting inspirational national and international speakers. The target was $200,000; however, the campaign reached considerably beyond this goal.
Regional Innovation Chair
The Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development Research was formally established on November 15, 2006, to conduct a program of research in support of rural economic development. The work of the Chair is based on community needs and partnerships with local and regional organizations and businesses.
In the past year, the Chair, George Penfold, has made an important contribution to regional initiatives relating to sustainability, affordable housing, tourism and food security, to mention but a few.
