Students
Our fundamental focus
Selkirk College exists for learners so it is only appropriate that this report begin with a look at the past year from that perspective.
Enrolment
Selkirk had the highest enrolment numbers in its 44-year history in 2000–10. In fact, we had the privilege of serving a total of 13,571 students; of these, approximately half were registered in full‐time programs and half in continuing education skills courses. These enrolments resulted in a full‐time equivalent (FTE) student delivery of 2,585—an increase of 50 over last year.
Convocation
The highlight of each academic year at Selkirk is the Convocation Ceremony held in late April. This year, almost 800 students graduated with degrees, diplomas or certificates from a variety of programs.
Recognition for achievements
We are very proud of our students and for good reason. Throughout the past year, Selkirk College students have received recognition for their achievements on all fronts; regionally, provincially and nationally.
As an example, Skills Canada BC holds a series of competitions each year in the hope of enhancing the value of technical and trades skills among BC’s youth. This year Brendin Zozman, a student in the Transitions to Trades program, won the provincial competition and went on to take gold at the Canadian Skills competition in the Electrical Wiring category.
Students were also very involved in some “giving” in the last year. An example of this was a “Relief Banquet” put on by students of the Professional Cook Training and Resort and Hotel Management programs. This banquet was held to raise funds to support the work of the Red Cross in Haiti.
In Nelson, students from the Carpentry and Electrical Foundation programs supported a local effort by Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation to raise $1.5 million by assisting with the framing and wiring of a house which was subsequently raffled off.
