The Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), in partnership with local colleges, is now accepting applications for the College Community Service Awards.

The College Community Service Award rewards mature students in the Columbia Basin who have been volunteers in their community and helps them further their education while remaining in their region.

Read about two Selkirk College students who benefited from the award.

New this year is a $2,000 award for a student studying at the Revelstoke Centre of the Okanagan College and a second $2,000 award for a student attending the Valemount Campus of the College of New Caledonia. The CBT also offers ten awards of $2,000 at Selkirk College and ten at the College of the Rockies.

"We are pleased to be able to increase the number of awards to students attending post-secondary education in the Basin," says Neil Muth, CBT Chief Executive Officer. "Partnering with the additional colleges enables us to provide financial assistance to students throughout the entire Columbia Basin."

"Okanagan College is very pleased that the CBT is supporting the educational endeavours of students in small, vibrant communities like Revelstoke," comments Janet Lemieux, Program Coordinator for the Okanagan College Revelstoke Campus. "These awards are particularly significant as they recognize the importance of building capacity within small communities and the essential role of volunteerism and community service. We would like to thank the CBT for their generous support."

The Community Service Awards are based on active and significant volunteer service and not on academic achievement. Volunteer service refers to a substantial contribution of time, energy, and/or talent that fosters social, economic, and/or environmental well-being without resulting in a financial benefit to the applicant.

"This award helps make it possible for Valemount residents to take the Northern Outdoor Recreation and Ecotourism program and rewards their volunteer contributions to the community. We thank the CBT for recognizing this need and investing in education and training in Valemount," says Wendy Dyson, Project Planner, College of New Caledonia, Valemount.

More information is available at any CBT office, www.cbt.org and each of the colleges' websites:

The CBT is a regionally-based Crown corporation created in 1995 to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. For more information about the CBT visit www.cbt.org or call 1-800-505-8998.
