Rick Mercer Singles Out Selkirk College for Remarkable Contribution (see video)
During episode eleven of CBC's Rick Mercer Report, which aired on Jan. 15, Mercer singled out Selkirk College for its remarkable contribution to the host's Spread the Net Campus Challenge.
The challenge enlisted the help of post-secondary institutions across the country to raise money for anti-malarial bed nets for children in Africa. A $10 bed net can protect a child from illness-borne mosquitoes for up to 5 years.
The small, rural British Columbia college, which is situated in the southeast corner of the province, raised a total $6,493.
Undaunted by the efforts of bigger universities with much larger student populations, Selkirk College instructors Allison Lutz and Elizabeth Lund vaulted Selkirk into sixth place overall.
Seventy-three teams from 35 Canadian colleges and universities took part in the competition, which raised more than $112,000 for the Spread the Net campaign.
"When you compare the size of Selkirk College with other institutions in the Campus Challenge, you'll notice that the people from this region are by far the most generous per capita," Lutz said.
