The Geography of Hope, A Guided Tour of the World

Share/Save/Bookmark

Chris Turner, author of the national bestseller The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need (Random House, 2007), and  of the international bestseller Planet Simpson: How A Cartoon Masterpiece Documented an Era and Defined a Generation (2004), will be coming to Nelson to share his optimism and solutions for a sustainable future.

Concerned about the unpromising future his newborn daughter might face, the Canadian journalist and author spent a year touring the world looking for solutions to the earth’s environmental crisis.

“I didn’t think I was going to find everything in one place and I didn’t think I’d find one solution,” explains Turner. “I wanted to look as far and wide as possible, find little pieces here and there, and put them together into a sort of map – a place in the mind that was worth aspiring too.“

Seeking out the next generation of political, economic, social, and spiritual institutions that could provide the global foundations for a sustainable future, Turner quickly came to realize that the tools for building a sustainable world were more plentiful and much closer at hand than he’d imagined.

The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need searches out the positive side of climate change in response to the fierce warnings and grim predictions of the environmental movement. The people and projects documented in Turner’s book and presentation all point to the bright light at the end of this very long tunnel.

Turner’s magazine writing – mostly for the late, great Shift Magazine – has earned him four Canadian National Magazine Awards and six honourable mentions, including the 2001 President's Medal for General Excellence (the highest honour in Canadian magazine writing). His writing and reporting on culture, technology and the environment have also appeared in The Independent (UK), Time Magazine, Maclean's, Canadian Geographic, The Walrus, Azure and Utne Reader. He also currently writes a monthly feature on sustainability for The Globe & Mail.

Chris Turner will be speaking at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson on Monday, February 16 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $11 advance and $16 at the door and are available at the Capitol Theatre.
