Selkirk College Learning Centres Extend Availability
Selkirk College’s Learning Centres in Nakusp and Kaslo will be extending their hours and availability by five weeks this year for the purposes of contract training and exam invigilation.
In the past, the Selkirk’s Learning Centres closed down for the months of June, July and August due to low enrollment and lack of funding. This year, because of the Resident Care Aide program in Nakusp and special programming in Kaslo, the centres are able to extend their operations and availability by five weeks.
“This is an excellent opportunity for local residents,” explained Dawn Lang, Continuing Education Coordinator for the Kaslo Learning Centre. “Individuals will now have an opportunity to take additional courses, have exams invigilated by college staff, and use the centres for other community based purposes.”
Selkirk College’s Learning Centres in Nakusp and Kaslo are largely used for courses offered through Selkirk’s School of Adult Basic Education and the Continuing Education Department. Many community-based organizations also utilize the centres for various functions and meetings.
In Nakusp, the Arrow Lakes Fine Arts (ALFA) Guild Gallery and the college have formed a partnership that benefits both organizations. A permanent seasonal gallery has been set up during the summer months, when much of the college is not being used. “From the end of May until the end of August part of the centre will be used as a gallery,” said Chris Faint, Continuing Education Coordinator for the Nakusp Learning Centre.”It’s was a perfect solution for both institutions. We had the space and ALFA needed a gallery.” The Guild Gallery occupies about half the college, leaving adequate administrative and classroom facilities for the college’s use.
