Selkirk College & USCC Develop Bridge of Peace

Representatives from the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (USCC) Executive Committee and Selkirk College recently signed an agreement to jointly work together to develop cultures of peace—creating a bridge of intent and practical activity between the two organizations.

The USCC has agreed to donate the use of the Brilliant Cultural Centre to Selkirk College’s Mir Centre for Peace for one event annually free of charge. The cost for additional use of the Brilliant Cultural Centre (up to two events) will also be donated to the Mir Centre for Peace programming.

In exchange, the college has agreed to allow the USCC free use of the Mir Centre for Peace building for up to two times per year upon request by the USCC for events which are consistent with the Mir Centre for Peace and Selkirk College philosophy.

“The intent of this agreement is that Selkirk College and the USCC will work together to create a ‘bridge’ of activity and peaceful intent between the Doukhobour community and the Brilliant Centre on one side of the Kootenay River and the Mir Centre for Peace and Selkirk College on the other,” explained John J. Verigin, Executive Director of the USCC. “We are hoping that this will prove to be an example of how communities, organizations and academic institutions can work together to improve the human condition.”

The Brilliant Cultural Centre recently played host to the celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace (September 21, 2009) and the launch of the Mir Centre for Peace Endowment Campaign.
