We’ve Gone Platinum! Selkirk Gala Celebrates 20 Years

This November, Selkirk College will be celebrating the 20th “Platinum” Anniversary of its signature fundraising event—the Gala.

This energetic event showcases and celebrates student talent and achievements by engaging the senses through music, food, art and amazing customer service. Funds raised from the evening will go towards enhancing students’ learning experiences and recognizing their achievements.

 “In addition to celebrating the 20th Anniversary of this important event,” explains Pat Henman, Event and Donor Development Coordinator for Selkirk, “patrons will gain an opportunity to truly experience what the college has to offer in terms of talent. This is a wonderful way for individuals in our communities to contribute directly to supporting students in our region.”

A five course dinner, featuring such dishes as Dungeness Crab Cake and Alder Smoked Duck Confit, along with an “Interactive” Dessert Buffet, will be prepared and hosted by students of the Professional Cook and Resort and Hotel Management programs. Live music will be provided courtesy of the Contemporary Music and Technology students and the service will be provided by students from the Aviation program and the students of the Human Services program.

A silent and live auction will also be held, with over 100 items to choose from. Last year, Selkirk College joined the Aeroplan Charitable Pooling Program, which means that individuals have contributed their Aeroplan Miles in support of student scholarships and awards. “With the help of the community and employees of Selkirk College, we have raised 70,000 miles to auction,” says Henman. “We are hoping that the money raised from this and other auction items will be of great benefit to our students.”

Last year over $8000.00 from the silent auction proceeds went to the Athletics program. This year proceeds will go to the students of the Human Services program which will be going to Guatemala in 2010. Proceeds also support other college programs involved in hosting the Gala.
