Selkirk College Holds Residence Renovation Sale
As the start-work date approaches for the residence renovation at the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson, Selkirk College is also nearing the deadline to find new homes for the building contents. A public “Furniture and Fittings” sale is planned for March 13, with all proceeds going towards the support of student programs.
Every corner of the building will be undergoing major work so there is no place to store items. Moving them from place to place is not feasible given the very short timeline of the project. The renovations must achieve substantial completion by March 31, 2011, which is only a year away.
Selkirk College has looked at what they can keep and what they can’t and has decided to offer its surplus to the public. The building needs to be absolutely empty so that contractors aren’t delayed by dealing with its contents.
“A big part of the residence renovation project is about reducing waste and making smarter environmental choices,” says Selkirk College Project Manager, Paula Kiss. “This building is full of great stuff and we want the public to have a crack at it instead of just putting it into storage or sending perfectly usable material to the landfill.”
Large items like beds, wardrobes, desks, mattresses, and smaller things like mirrors, towel racks, cork boards, curtains and bedding will be for sale. Even attached items like cabinets, sinks and tubs will be up for grabs. It’s all got to go.
“It’ll be fun. People will get to see inside, help us kick off the reno, contribute to student programs, and score some great deals while they are at it. This will be the biggest garage sale Nelson has ever seen!” says Kiss.
The sale will take place on Saturday, March 13 from 10:00 am-4:00 pm at the dorms on the Tenth Street Campus in upper Fairview, Nelson. Shoppers will be assisted by Selkirk students to find what they are looking for. Items can be claimed, paid for and taken away on Saturday, March 13. Sunday will be an alternate day for pick-ups for anyone that has purchased an item, but is unable to arrange a vehicle for the day of the sale.
