Music lovers reach higher note at Selkirk

Selkirk College and instructor Maria Ciardullo are offering a dynamic opportunity for music lovers to reach a higher note through fundamental music theory.

A Music Theory course for beginners is being offered at Selkirk College’s Trail campus and will cover everything from the fundamentals of musical notation and time values to meter and rhythm, keys and key signatures, major and minor scales, chord structure, transposition and analysis.

Music instructor Maria Ciardullo has nearly 25 years of experience teaching music and is excited to be offering the course to her community. “It’s a privilege to be able to share my knowledge and love of music,” says Maria. “Band members, choir members, music students and people that simply want to become familiar with the basics will experience an increase in their understanding of how music is composed and why it sounds the way it does.”

Students and individuals preparing for Royal Conservatory of Music exams and/or university and college entrance theory exams will also find the class very beneficial.

“The study of music instills many qualities in students such as discipline, dedication, commitment, sense of accomplishment, confidence, coordination and problem solving skills,” says Maria. “In fact, students who study music often excel in other academic studies such as math and science!”
