Selkirk College Hosts Camosun College
The scores from week three for the Saints’ women read 3-0 (29-27, 25-14, 26-24) and 3-1 (25-9, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17) in favour of the Camosun Chargers from Victoria. While from the perspective of the 150 fans in the stands on Friday night there were many entertaining moments, it was the gutsy spirit of the team that has coach Joe Moreira excited with the team’s weekend play.
“We started the first set on Friday night aggressively and confidently, certainly what you hope for in a season opener,” stated Moreira. Unfortunately we didn’t capitalize on the 23-19 lead, but this isn’t the story from this weekend’s series.”
The story, Moreira is referring to, is the team’s play after losing their setter, Sam Schneider (Calgary, Alberta), to a thigh injury. Although the injury occurred earlier in the week, Sam tried to play through it but it was obvious that she was in pain. It was equally obvious to Moreira that the Saints were intent in filling in for Sam and battle Camosun for every point.
“I am really proud of our team’s gutsy effort when it became clear that Sam couldn’t continue”. Moreira adds, “This wasn’t just putting on a brave face, the girl’s were intent in beating Comosun. Their will to compete for the balance of the match on Friday and for almost two hours on Saturday is inspiring”.
Saints Notables: Marlee Kanigan – 29 kills, Myia Malakoff – 30 digs, Alicia Dodds – 27 digs, Aly Manning – 6 blocks
Next up for the Saints are the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Friday and Saturday, November 20, 21, at the Castlegar Campus.
