2010 Legacies Now Supports National Golf Championships in Castlegar
Vancouver, B.C. (April 25, 2007):2010 Legacies Now, through its Hosting BCTM program, is investing $9,000 in the 2007 Ping CCAA Golf Open Championships, which will take place in Castlegar this October. This funding is part of an overall investment of $271,500 in 11 communities hosting 20 major sporting events around B.C.
“Castlegar will undoubtedly see both social and economic benefits from hosting this prestigious athletic event,” said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen. “I am pleased to see Castlegar, along with the other Hosting BCTM communities, striving to bring national and international sport events home.”
“2010 Legacies Now is committed to building B.C.’s reputation as a premier sport event destination,” said Bruce Dewar, chief executive officer, 2010 Legacies Now. “From golf and sailing, to sledge hockey and curling, the Hosting BCTM program is helping communities attract and host a wide range of sport events.”
Spectators will visit Castlegar to watch more than 100 golfers compete in the 2007 Ping CCAA Golf Open Championships taking place October 9-12, 2007.
“The 2007 Ping CCAA Golf Open Championships would like to thank 2010 Legacies Now for its invaluable support,” said Kim Verigin, athletic director, Selkirk College. “This Hosting BCTM grant will assist us in developing our local athletes, attracting athletes from across the country, and hosting an excellent competitive event.”
“An event like the 2007 Ping CCAA Golf Open Championships showcases Castlegar as a great sport tourism destination,” said Audrey Maxwell Polovnikoff, co-chair of the Castlegar Spirit of BC Community Committee. “This is an ideal opportunity for our athletes to compete locally and will be the perfect occasion to develop skilled volunteers within our community.”
Hosting BCTM provides funding to organizations throughout British Columbia to host national and international-level sport events in B.C. Single-sport events at junior, senior and university levels are eligible for funding. This year, events receiving Hosting BCTM grants include Canadian championships, World Cups and Olympic Games qualifying tournaments.
Funded by the Province of B.C. and the City of Vancouver, Hosting BCTM has invested over $1.6 million in 30 communities to host 116 events since 2004.
