Criteria

The MIR Award promotes the ideals of peace, international unity, and the dignity of work and service on behalf of humanity. The Award is intended to support projects in Canada or overseas. Priority will be given to Selkirk College student submissions. However, the Award is also open to submissions/projects from the broader communities which the College serves. The Award is intended to support projects in the areas of international and cross-cultural relations and may be linked to programs and projects identified by the MIR Centre for Peace. This award will be given at the Spring 2005 Scholarships & Awards ceremonies, with the proviso that the Award will not be given in any year when suitable applicants or submissions are not identified. Application for this award is open to College students and to Community members

Students and community members who wish to be considered for the MIR Award should submit a proposal which meets the following minimum application requirements:

1. The applicant must write a letter, addressed to the Selkirk College Foundation, Attn: MIR Award, which outlines the proposed project and states specifically why the project would add to enhanced quality of education or student life at Selkirk as well as how it would contribute to one or more of peace, international unity, the dignity of work and service on behalf of humanity, cross-cultural relations, or international cooperation.

The applicant may also choose to outline his/her past commitments/undertakings in the above areas and state how the current project is connected with past achievements.

The letter must clearly state the time period when the project would be carried out as well as its locations(s).

Finally, the letter must contain the names of two references (including contact telephone numbers) who may be contracted by the MIR Award Committee as part of its assessment of the application.

2. Applicants may also include in their application packages visual or other materials which they believe will aid the Committee in making its decision.

3. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview with MIR Committee members before a final decision on the award is made.

4. Upon completion of the project for which the MIR Award is given, the student or community member is required to write a brief report directly to Selkirk College Foundation, and may be required to give presentation to the College community, supplying details of the actual project and an analysis of the success of the undertaking. Group applications will be considered. The person responsible for the entire project will be deemed the applicant.

5. The application deadline is April 29, 2010 (letter/application packages must be received at the Selkirk College Development offices by this date). The award will be given at the College Scholarship & Awards ceremonies in September of the same year.
