Over the past three decades the cost of renewable energy has dropped to the point where it now costs less than conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Further, it is technically possible, even in countries with high rates of energy consumption such as Canada and the USA, to generate all of the energy we currently consume from renewable resources. Renewable energy is more reliable and less expensive than conventional energy and it has a fewer adverse environmental impacts. This talk will examine the current state of renewable energy, its potential, and how we can switch from being fossil fuel dependent to a renewable energy economy while minimizing any social disruption that might be expected with such a transition.
