Classroom 1: Types of Bee Hives, Bee Biology and Seasonal Cycles
Traditional Langstroth compared to Top Bar hives. Beekeeping equipment and where to get it. Getting bees and hiving them. Queen, drone and worker anatomy, development and roles in the beehive. Bee Killers: Pathogens, Parasites, Pest, and Predators - forms viruses to bears.

Classroom 2: Seasonal Cycles and Hive Management
Seasonal colony numbers and activities. Harvesting with or without a honey extract. How to make money with bees. Municipal bylaws and BC Animal Health Act. Relationship to Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Pest Management. Regulatory agency - bee clubs, bee banks and internet sources.

Field Day 1: Spring Assessment & Checking For Disease
How healthy and strong is your beehive coming out of winter? What can you do to help them along? Checking and treating for Nosema, Varroa, and brood diseases.
Field Day 2: Getting Bees
Ways to get bees; packages, "nucs," complete hives, and swarms. Putting a package of bees into a hive.
Field Day 3: Swarms
Catching a swarm of bees and getting them into a hive. Building and using bait boxes to catch swarms.
Field Day 4: Extracting Honey
Getting honey out of the hive safely. Liquid honey, cut comb honey, creamed honey. Liquid honey with or without an extractor.
Field Day 5: Preparing For Winter
Fall disease treatment, fall feeding. Preparing for cold, wind, snow, and condensation.
Beekeeper Series: Microscopic Lab Session
Using the stereoscopic and compound microscopes to observe honeybee anatomy and to check for Nosema spores
