On Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, Selkirk College is hosting a Family Pow Wow. A day of dance classes and teaching with Jesse Mcmann-Sparvier.
Jesse McMann-Sparvier is an emerging contemporary dancer and choreographer. Having been primarily a traditional hoop dancer for the past 11 years, she started branching out after attending a Raven Spirit Dance training week and a Red Sky performance art residency.
Jesse’s work started out firmly grounded in the powwow styles of the prairies; choreographing intricate stories held within powwow dance styles and traditions. (Butterfly Warrior, Dark Wing, Death of a Butterfly) In the past few years the works started to explore two-spirit and gender identity (Two-Spirit, Natoowa Pakaa Ksiiks, Dysphoria), but yet have never lost the firm grounding and teachings of Blackfoot and Cree culture. Drawing from personal experience, Cree and Blackfoot language, and the ultimate web of relationships from a macro to micro level guide her current work.
This event is all ages, everyone is welcome.
