I grew up in a prairie country "teacherage" where I escaped our back yard over the gate every day to follow my Dad's voice into the school. Sitting on the hallway floor at the threshold of his open classroom door, I listened as he talked to a room full of children about something called math. "Debbie's back!” I’d hear them say. At the end of each day, my Dad would carry me home. I finally got old enough to ride my tricycle around and around the outside of the building to pass time, until I was invited in! If the first 6 years imprint you for life - I can't imagine being anywhere else but this college. I have felt this clarity of purpose for my entire 35 year teaching career in Adult Basic Education, but now I sit in a chair!
I was hired in the college system the day after my university practicum ended during my 5 year Co-op program towards a Bachelor of Social Work. That was 35 years ago. I have remained in Adult Basic Education all these years designing credit courses and facilitating groups as a Certified Life Skills Coach. I was the originating member of the Adult Basic Education Provincial Working Committee for Provincial Articulation in Education & Career Planning. I then chaired this committee for ten years.
