Following graduation from the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography and English, Mac worked as a social worker for 3 years. He then returned to the University of Regina for an education degree in secondary education where he majored in English and Social Studies. Upon completion of his education degree, Mac taught High School English and Social Studies for six years in Saskatchewan. In 1989, Mac left Canada for a one year "teaching hiatus" in Kanagawa, Japan, near Tokyo. This "leave of absence" turned into three and a half years in Japan. As it happens, Mac had made a complete switch to English Language in the meantime.
In 1993, on his return to Canada, Mac moved to the beautiful Kootenay region in Canada and began his current teaching career with Selkirk College. With over twenty years teaching in Canada and Japan, Mac continues to love his work and feels fortunate to have a career which enables him to live, teach and interact with so many students and friends from all over the world.
