All Selkirk College students must have medical insurance for the entire time they study through Selkirk College.
Basic Medical Insurance
All Selkirk College students are required to have basic medical insurance. It covers doctors visits, emergencies and hospital care. Your Basic Medical Insurance must provide at least $1,000,000.00 CDN in coverage. If you did not purchase it in your home country, you must purchase it in Canada immediately from the International Student Services Coordinator. More information is available here.
Canadian Students have coverage through their provincial medical insurer (in BC this is called BC MSP).
International students will need to purchase private basic medical insurance for the first semester they are in British Columbia. After they can enroll in BC MSP.
SCSU Extended Health and Dental Medical Insurance
All full time students (60% course load or more/14 weeks or longer) enrolled in University and College programs are required to have extended health and dental coverage. Every full time student, meeting the requirements, is automatically assessed the extended health dental coverage.
English Language Program International students will not be assessed the extended health and dental coverage.
English Language Program Domestic students will be assessed the extended health and dental coverage.
Extended health and dental coverage is not MSP (basic health care) and covers many things MSP does not.
If you already have existing health and dental coverage you have the option to opt out.
To opt out, you must complete the opt out form and submit it with proof of existing coverage to the Selkirk College Students’ Union (SCSU) by the deadline. The deadline is the last day of the month that your course starts. If you do not opt our properly or on time you will have the extended health and dental coverage and the fees associated with them.
The extended health and dental coverage is with Green Shield Canada http://student.greenshield.ca/en-ca and is administered by the SCSU. Check out the SCSU website http://selkirkstudents.ca/ to find all the forms and instructions.
