Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
PROGRAM LENGTH: 4-Month / DEGREE/DIPLOMA: Advanced Diploma
GENERAL INFORMATION
The program will include coursework in the areas of second language acquisition theory and linguistics, current practices, curriculum design, materials development, intercultural communication, classroom management and assessment. The program consists of 16 hours of classes per week, with an additional 3 hours of practicum per week. The one semester program is approximately 14 weeks in length. Courses include:
- Introduction to TESOL Theory (3 Hours)
- Classroom Practice and Organization (3 Hours)
- English Language Curriculum & Materials Development (3 Hours)
- Language and Culture (3 Hours)
- Practicum Experience and Seminar (3 Hours)
The following courses are taken as one-month modules in sequence:
- Grammar and Phonology (3 Hours)
- Testing and Evaluation (3 Hours)
- CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) (3 Hours)
A teaching practicum is an integral part of the TESOL Program. From the second week of classes, students will be involved in classroom observations and then proceed to small group and whole group teaching. Students will benefit from the proximity of the current English Language Program at Selkirk College. Through observation, practice and review, students will be able to gain first hand experience. Well-qualified and experienced instructors in the program will provide guidance, supervision and ongoing support.
Program Objectives
There is a growing global demand for qualified English language teachers. The one semester TESOL Certificate Program will provide Canadian and international students with an intensive overview of the fundamental elements of teaching English to speakers of other languages. The program will facilitate student knowledge and understanding of second language teaching theory and methodology. Skills will be developed through classroom and practicum assignments focusing on teaching English writing, reading, communications and grammar. Practice teaching within the Selkirk College English Language Program will provide students with concrete experience. A TESOL certificate from Selkirk College will be awarded to successful graduates.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must have successfully graduated from a degree, diploma or certificate program from a recognized institution, or have completed at least two years of post-secondary education. Prior work or volunteer educational experience, preferably with second language learners, and/or coursework in education is desirable. Entrance requirements include an average of C+ in prior coursework, an interview, and an essay. Additionally, applicants who are speakers of other languages must provide evidence of a minimal TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer), or an IELTS score of 6.5.
