Selkirk College and Teck Metals Ltd. Trail Operations announce the call for proposals for the 2013 TeckServ Learning Internship Program. This annual program, which is in its third year, provides support for Selkirk College students to undertake local community service learning applied research projects designed to offer an ongoing benefit.
The TeckServ funding supports students as they work on applied research projects and adds to TeckTrail Operations’ ongoing commitment to Selkirk College, its students and the communities in the region.
The 2012 research project focused on better understanding housing need and demand in Castlegar and was led by New Vision Housing Society. New Vision Housing Society works to increase the housing inventory within Castlegar and the region to support those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and to move them towards stable and secure housing.
“This internship has been amazing for me,” states Traci Goertzen, 2012 TeckServ Intern. “This opportunity has allowed me to see my own potential while applying the skills I’ve learned in Selkirk’s Human Services Program. The opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in my first year of the social service worker stream was of enormous benefit.”
“It was a real pleasure for the Co-op Education and Employment Services (CEES) to be involved with the TeckServ Summer Internship during 2012,” says Brenda Smith, Manager of Co-op Education at Selkirk College. “Our Selkirk College internship student, Traci Goertzen, did an exemplary job and the employer, New Vision Housing Society, provided quality mentorship to Traci in regards to this internship.”
