Graduate Testimonials: 2011-2012

I would highly recommend Selkirk’s AMT program to anyone who is interested in pursuing medical transcription as a career. The course requirements may seem excessive at the time, but all the hard work put in during the courses definitely pays off during the final exam. Additionally, the instructors take their roles very seriously and support the students 100%.

This program fully prepares the student for a professional career as an MT. The student is led through a series of courses that build on each other, furthering one’s knowledge and proficiency through authentic dictation and exposure to a wide variety of dictating styles, accents, and report types. Instructors are truly dedicated to helping students succeed and the online classroom environment is very supportive. I chose the Selkirk AMT program after careful research and I know I made the right choice. I now feel confident to pursue this career.

I started this program as a way to make money from home after I had 2 children. I also needed a program that allowed me to complete it from my home rather than in the classroom as well. This program offered both of those things. I also needed a program that was something I was interested in. I really enjoy proofreading, editing and typing so this program offered that as well. It also tapped into areas that challenge me as well, memorization, continual knowledge as this career requires that you are adaptable and flexible to learning more. I really enjoyed my time in this program, it was challenging and frustrating at times but now that I am on the other side it was well worth the effort. I am able to work from home now and quite enjoy it. I hope any future graduates who are interested in this program take the time to check out what Selkirk has to offer. It is also nice that my now current employers recognize this program from Selkirk.

I feel fully prepared for life as a Medical Transcriptionist. The real dictation made the adjustment from school life to working life absolutely seamless. I am confident in my abilities and feel good about the knowledge I acquired while in the program. It was slow going at first but I got better as time went on. You may not feel like you are ever going to get where you need to be, but you will. It just takes time and practice. Before you know it you’ll be a graduate!

The Selkirk AMT program is challenging and intense, and you must be dedicated and determined to finish the course. When you do, you will have gained skills that will make you a confident and employable MT. The amount of dictation that you are exposed to as well as the different styles more than prepares you for the real world of transcription. The instructors are very supportive and encouraging, and there is no question, in my mind, that I made the right choice of school to achieve my career goal of becoming an MT.

Though I haven’t searched for work yet, I felt very comfortable during my practicum. There was nothing that surprised me or that I could not figure out. Using the resource books really is helpful and I’ve learned so much I can’t even believe it! I am so looking forward to having this as a career, and I have Selkirk to thank for that!

I must tell you that your AMT program is the most difficult program I have ever taken so far online but it has also been the best program I have ever taken online. You made me work hard for my marks. You made me practice and practice and practice until I thought I could not do another document. But the next day I would be at my studies, reading and practicing yet again and trying to improve further. Initially when I started the program I did not like the idea of posting in the Forums. But I soon came to understand that proofreading other students documents is so very much a part of this work. The Forums sections were the one place where the students talked to each other and to the instructors. And I started looking at these sections more and more. I found that even though I had moved on to another course in the program, I would still go back and proofread the occasional student document in a course that I had finished months ago. When one of the instructors would post comments in the Forums sections to explain a concept or difficulty a student was having, I would save it to my ever-growing file of notes that I keep in a separate folder in my AMT file. I have come to hang on every word of critiquing from other students and from the instructors. I do not know if the other students are aware how much their words of criticism meant to a student from the prairies, but they made me feel connected and a part of something really important. I cannot thank them or the instructors enough. I came to realize how important detail is in a patient document and I came to understand and accept that the transcribed document is the doctors words, not mine, and therefore, in respect of the doctor and patient, must be transcribed as he/she dictates. Overall, I am pleased with the course, with your delivery, with your instruction. I found that I could telephone the instructors any time during class time and they were there to answer my questions. This is one of the best things I ever did for me. I will recommend this course to anyone who asks me about my training and the college from where I took my training. Thank you so much.

All is going well here. Am working still for an orthopedic surgeon 1 to 2 days a week and for an ophthalmologist 1 day a month. When I get back to the Island on May 15th, I will be working at the Coleman Clinic in Duncan for a couple of weeks for a couple of hours per day. Still really enjoying it as it gives me the freedom of travelling while working from home. I am up in Quesnel right now and working from up here. Kathy - AMT Program graduate 2010
Thank you!
