GIS Student Showcase
When you join Selkirk, you join a family. Our small and personable classes offer a supportive environment unavailable at larger institutions. Although the Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems program is challenging, our unique classroom experience creates an atmosphere destined for success, enabling students to hit the ground running when they graduate.

Is here because he values simplicity, innovation and solid research.
Clinton Syfchuck
Grew up and graduated in Nelson, BC. His passion for the outdoors led him to pursue an education in the natural resources industry. In 2009, he graduated from the Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program. Currently he is is enrolled in the GIS Program at Selkirk College. After completing the Bachelor of GIS Program, Clinton plans on pursuing a career in the natural resources industry.
Dave Bruneau
Graduated from the Recreation Fish and Wildlife program offered by Selkirk College in 2009. He is currently enrolled in the Bachelors of GIS (BGIS) program offered by Selkirk College. His interests include playing guitar, camping/fishing and meeting new people. He plans to take over the world one map at a time.
Dave Messinger
Graduated from the Forest Technology Diploma at Selkirk College in 2009. He is currently working on the BGIS Degree offered at Selkirk College. His interests include hunting, hiking, and just about anything else you can do outdoors. His plans are to gain some good GIS experience in the work force and live one step at a time.
DD Sheets
Graduated from Selkirk College’s Wildland Recreation Technology program in 1992, College of New Caledonia’s Advanced Diploma in GIS in 1999, and Selkirk College’s Carpentry Foundations in 2011. She has worked mainly as a consultant in the field of mine reclamation, restoration and wildlife studies but also in the forest industry. Presently completing her Bachelor’s degree in GIS at Selkirk College and intends to follow that with a MA in Environmental Management from Royal Roads University while working as an apprentice carpenter.
Kylie Morin
Grew up in Saskatoon and attended the University of Saskatchewan. When she moved to the West Kootenays Kylie decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in GIS at Selkirk College. After completing her degree she would love to start her career in the region. Kylie enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the mountains.
Michelle West
After growing up and completing her Business Administration Diploma in Alberta, Michelle escaped with her husband and traveled the world. It was this trip that spiked her interest in the wide, beautiful world and convinced her to move to the Kootenays where she could experience it on her doorstep. She now spends her time enjoying the mountains, lakes and wildlife with her family.
Paul Simpson
After graduating from the Business Administration - Marketing program at Conestoga college, Paul worked in business for several years before moving to Castlegar for the Forest tech program. Paul is now in the BGIS program aiming at a degree for 2013.
Sarah Schneider
Graduated with a degree in Natural Resource Science from Thompson Rivers University. She has experience working in forestry as a field technician, and after completion of the GIS diploma hopes to broaden her experience in other natural resource fields and applying her GIS experience. When not in school Sarah enjoys spending time in the great outdoors skiing, hiking, biking or running.
Stacy Doyle
Is originally from Western Canada, as she has lived in Alberta, BC, and Yukon Territory. A current student in ADGIS at Selkirk College, a 2004 BSc Geography Graduate from University of Victoria, and a 1997 Recreation Leadership Graduate from Camosun College. She is constantly involved in sports and recreation of all kinds for all seasons, and is a committed volunteer within her community and area.
Vicky Young
Has been working in the natural resource sector for ten years during which time she gained a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She spent several years working throughout southern British Columbia conducting species at risk surveys. Vicky was exposed to GIS throughout her academic and professional career leading her to pursue an advanced diploma in GIS. Her love of the outdoors was a perfect fit for attending the program at Selkirk College in Castlegar.
