Bio
Derek has worked in the forestry and biology fields since 1986. His career started as a forest technician employed in the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions of BC. In 1989, he moved to Nelson and continued work as a forest technician while completing his studies in plant biology and ecology and the University of Victoria. After graduation he was employed by a local consultant as an ecosystem mapper. This work gave him the opportunity to travel all over British Columbia and study the ecosystems, soils and flora. In 1997, he started working for Selkirk College at the Greenwood extension center teaching biology and soils. He has instructed at the Castlegar campus since 1998 and took the role of School Chair in 2010. His interests are in plant ecology, plant identification and ecological restoration.
