Bio
Ian started work at Selkirk College as a GIS Instructor in the IEP program in 2002. His background was in conservation geographic information science (GIS): he worked for the Long Beach Model Forest on Vancouver Island while a research assistant at UBC, and for the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program in Nelson as GIS Coordinator for many years. He brought expertise in GIS analysis, data management, and cartography as well as his extensive local and regional network of GIS and natural resource professionals to the original Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre (SGRC) team. In this role Ian helped design the curriculum for Selkirk's Advanced Diploma in GIS as well build research infrastructure and capacity at the College.
Over the years Ian has led a variety of projects for the SGRC, including an analysis of wolverine habitat in the Columbia Mountains, the development of an online biodiversity atlas for the region (www.biodiversityatlas.org) and a range of water management projects in an ongoing partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust. His current interests are in Internet mapping, public access to information, and visualizing geography through 2D maps and 3D perspective views and flyovers.
Last year Ian began an MSc in Geography at UBC while on assisted education leave from the College. As well as completing required courses, Ian helped develop improved interactive internet maps for the E-Flora project (www.geog.ubc.ca/biodiversity/eflora/). He is excited to return to teaching at Selkirk as well as assuming a new leadership role as SGRC Coordinator.
