Skattebo Educational Forest
Situated on the South shore of the Kootenay River, along Skattebo Reach, the Skattebo Educational Forest is a 285-hectare private land area, managed by the faculty and students in collaboration with local communities.
The lands comprise a low elevation, riparian and upland ecosystem with varied soil and forest conditions that provide a number of important opportunities for wildlife habitat. It is an important recreation area containing a lengthy section of the Skattebo Reach Trail. Local community recreation and use is high, and the College is working with the public to ensure that the College is both a good steward and good neighbor.
The School of Renewable Resources has undertaken a strategic planning process that involves identifying the values of the property to the community, and identifying a land management model that allows for meaningful collaboration with all users. The College is conducting an inventory program that will record and describe information about ecosystems, habitat, as well as cultural and heritage values.
The planning process will result in a strategic plan for the lands that will represent the "Vision" for the Skattebo Educational Forest and guide the day to day management operations on the lands. Student involvement is designed at all levels of land management.
