Peace Studies Programs at Selkirk College
The School of University Arts and Sciences and the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College offer two interdisciplinary values-based programs in peace studies. The Associate of Arts Degree in Peace Studies focuses on peace and environmental sustainability, and the Liberal Arts Diploma in Peace Studies emphasizes peace in a cultural and international context. Students will have the opportunity to engage in service learning experiences, or in directed peace studies-related academic research.
Both programs combine coursework in humanities, social sciences and sciences with core courses in peace studies. Although peace studies will be explored in some depth, the programs are broad enough to provide the lower level undergraduate requirements for a wide variety of disciplines. Students who successfully complete either program may transfer into Bachelor of Arts degree programs at universities in British Columbia or elsewhere in Canada, or into specialized Peace Studies degree programs.
Peace studies can be applied to many interest areas and career paths, including education, labour studies, conflict resolution, anthropology, sociology, psychology, history, international relations and development, political science, religious studies, criminal justice, environmental law, business, public relations and work with non-governmental organizations.
