"Mir", an ancient Russian word with the complex meaning of peace, community and world, encompasses and defines the following values:

  • Peace and social justice for the individual, family, community and the world
  • Respect for cultural, ethnic, philosophical, spiritual, religious and intellectual diversity
  • Dignity of work and service to humanity
  • Education and learning which advance these values

Selkirk College and the Mir Centre for Peace seek to reward those advancing the ideals of peace and human rights. The Mir Award and the Peace and Human Rights Award are presented each year at the fall Scholarship and Award ceremonies.
