Local Government Web Mapping - RDKB and City of Rossland
SGRC Lead Researcher: Chris Gray
Collaborating Agency: Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and City of Rossland
Since 2005, the SGRC has partnered with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) to host and further develop RDKB's spatial data in a web mapping service to be made accessible to the public and authorized users through a web browser.
This development involved restructuring RDKB's geodatabase design to integrate with BC Assessment data, providing a secure online environment to ensure sensitive information is protected and providing various levels of access related to layers and reports available to the end-user. Ongoing work includes monthly maintenance of updating layers and map service, ensuring the site and online services are available at all times, data backup, and upgrades to the back-end infrastructure.
In 2009, City of Rossland agreed to also host their spatial data on the popular web mapping service which involved similar database restructuring and maintenance requirements as mentioned above. Both organizations have a large amount of data available including orthophotos, Land use (zoning and OCP), cadastral, roads, utilities/infrastructure and much more. The RDKB and City of Rossland have happily reported that this service have become an increasingly valuable part of their operations both internally and externally and have saved countless hours having to deal with individual public mapping inquiries.
