Wolverine Habitat Use Analysis
SGRC Lead Researcher: Ian Parfitt
Collaborating Agency: Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program
Between 1995 and 2003 Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (CBFWCP) and partners conducted field research on wolverine habitat use and demographics near Revelstoke, BC. The first piece of the research (Rates and Causes of Mortality) has been published in the Journal of Wildlife Management; a second has been submitted to the Canadian Journal of Zoology on Food Habits.
Now the research team is turning their attention to Habitat Use analysis. A multi-scale design has been developed for this analysis, however it is incomplete as data input layers key to the analysis have only recently been completed. The SGRC’s Ian Parfitt will complete the GIS-based analysis; contribute to the reporting of results, and produce resultant grids for future use for management and conservation of the species. The final product will be a manuscript suitable for publication in Wildlife Biology or Journal of Wildlife Management which will be authored by primary researcher(s) and Ian Parfitt. The paper was presented at the first International Symposium of Wolverine Management and Research held in June 2005, Jokkmokk, Sweden.
