Environment Matters: Our People Making a Difference

  • Printer cartridge recycling: Spearheaded by Kerry Young, staff members on the Trail Campus are saving used printer cartridges and photocopier toner cartridges for pickup and recycling by the local Salvation Army. Funds go to the Sanctuary youth centre to provide food and after school care for kids.
  • Cooking oil gets new life: Tim Thurston (Renewable Resources) is working with Castlegar kitchen staff to collect used cooking oil for conversion to biodiesel. This will divert approximately 20 litres of oil per week from the landfill.
  • Paper recycling: On the Silver King campus, Ray Brock’s Transitional Training class has been in charge of paper recycling for over 10 years. They go around to all collection points, including offices, to ensure that recycle bins are emptied regularly.
  • Efficient glass: The Facilities Department has replaced single-glazed windows on the Castlegar and Silver King campuses with high efficiency double-glazed windows.
  • Residence recycling: Students Alex Cole (left) and Fraser Hayes (right) have purchased 100 recycling bins for the campus residences with funds provided by the Selkirk College Student Union.

  • Coffee rebates: To encourage reduce, reuse and recycle the Castlegar campus cafeteria provides a 20¢ discount on beverages if you bring a Selkirk College travel mug (or a china mug), and a 10¢ discount for other travel mugs. If you’ve forgotten your mug their disposable cups are 99% post-consumer paper and 100% biodegradable.
