Information for Faculty
In the first few weeks of a new semester, there are always adjustments to make, and some students may find they experience greater challenges than others.
Early identification of issues and timely support may make all the difference to a student’s success in a program.
Early Alert is an online referral system that enables instructors to identify students who are facing challenges in their courses or programs. This should occur during the first 3-4 weeks of a semester.
Students referred to Early Alert will be contacted by e-mail within approximately 2 days and invited to meet with a member of the Student Access and Support department. The student will then be connected with appropriate support services or resources. If there is no response from the student within 10 working days, there will be follow up contact either by telephone or e-mail.
A student’s participation in Early Alert is voluntary; after we contact a student, they can choose to NOT accept the support offered.
Due to confidentiality, we cannot disclose the nature of services accessed by the student. However, as an instructor, you will be informed that a meeting with the student has or has not occurred.
If you identify any of the following behaviours in a student, please follow the Early Alert link.
- Struggling with coursework
- Absenteeism
- Chronic lateness
- Falling asleep in class
- Overdue or incomplete assignments
- Failed assignments/quizzes
Early Alert is available for the first 5 weeks of the fall and winter semesters. At all other times, students should be referred directly to the following student support services:
