Your student representatives to the Education Council and Board of Governors have been selected for the 2016/17 school year. Meet your student leaders...
My name is Oleksandr and I am from Ukraine. I am a freshman here and have only first impressions about Selkirk College. I am really happy to have been accepted and now able to fulfill my goals! I consider my lack of knowledge about Selkirk College and Canada as my biggest advantage.
I was a class leader and volunteer in Student Parliament at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in Ukraine. There I got many ideas that could be implemented at Selkirk.
I promise it would be something new for everyone! My main goal lies in cooperation between College and employers. Everybody knows that students go here in order to get a desirable job after graduation.
We should help employers to see skills and competence of our students. There are four main ways of self-fulfillment for graduates: working for companies in private sector; establishing own business; working for public sector; scientific activities. We should give our students the option to choose the right and desirable direction.
I was privileged to serve on Education Council for the 2015/2016 academic year. I am looking forward to representing students in the upcoming year. I bring to the table a variety of viewpoints as I have been an online student, an upgrading student and now going into my second year of full time studies at the Castlegar Campus. Throughout my time at Selkirk College I have built relationships with many amazing people both in my program and in other areas of the school.
My life experiences have prepared me to work with people from all walks of life. I have an innate ability to connect with others. I feel it is one of my best features and has allowed to me to connect with many amazing people. By having this quality, it will give me the opportunity to represent the entire student body in a positive way.
I truly enjoy embracing the communities I am a part of and serving in any way possible. I would love the chance to work with the faculty, support staff, administrative staff and fellow students.
It am looking forward to the opportunity to serve on the Education Council. My vision is to highlight those issues which are getting faded a per students’ perspective. My priority is to help all the students with calmness and courage whether international or domestic by providing them with the appropriate resources like counseling etc. and get headed to the right decision.
I will seek to understand the pros and cons of the situation. Furthermore, being a leader, I would like to tackle problems with honesty and simplicity, so that quick actions will be taken by all members. It will use this opportunity to show my skills and to sharpen them.
Selkirk College is the only institution in Castlegar and in nearby towns. Therefore, in development purpose of the whole community it wold be great to visualize the talents from the world as Canada is a multicultural country. As it is like the advancement of Selkirk College will ultimately result in the progress of the Castlegar and Canada.
I am currently a students in the Associate Degree (Science) Program. For the past three years I have served as Class President in India. A Head of Department, I was responsible for the secretarial duties as well as overseeing all council programming to make sure the events you want happen and managing all Internal activities.
If you want any work done you will get your work done! I am happy to be on board!
Board of Governors
Being part of the Selkirk College Board is an excellent opportunity not only to showcase my talents, but also to grow my leadership skills. I am a second year student in the Resort and Hotel Management program at Selkirk College and was the first year Resort and Hotel Management representative on the Advisory Board meeting.
I have made many connections with student and teachers from different programs here in Nelson and have been recognized as a leader in my classes. Taking initiative and always going the extra mile to ensure that tasks are completed are some of the ways I show my commitment to my schoolwork and also in my summer work place at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
I am committed to doing my utmost to better my school community and to represent all students to the board. My passion for my school, community and fellow students makes this chance to be a part of the Board a much anticipated experience.
With great passion, I accept this position on the Board of Governors of Selkirk College. I am a second year Business student of the Post Grad Diploma Program. I have served as a member of the Education Council of Selkirk College in my first year. I am also a Peer Tutor and a part of the Student Ambassador Program of the College. I know the college and its policies which will helm me in this position.
I am really interested in bringing a broader view to the table that I have because of my experience and knowledge. As I was part of the board of the college in India where I worked for two years as an Instructor, I think I can be a good addition to the Board of Governors. Moreover, being an International Student, I can represent the International Community of student of the college and understand them clearly.
