High Technology for Mapping our World: An introduction to some of the technology used in mapping and collecting data in the disciplines of environmental science. Try your own GIS mapping!

Human Services Turn the World Around: Come together with members of the Human Services team and use tarps, tape, webbing and knots to discover practical strategies that Human Services students use to make the world a better place.

Why Study Chemistry? Why Study Chemistry?  To understand, appreciate and do something about things that are going on in the world!  In this session, examples of media advertising will be combined with live chemical demonstrations to show how basic chemical education is important to everyone.

Have you ever wondered why?  It has to do with the depression of the freezing point of an aqueous solution.  You can apply this same sewage principle in a number of situations like making ice cream the old fashion way. Mmmm doesn’t a bowl of ice cream sound a lot better than sewage?

Equipment Operations: Welcome to the School of Industry & Trades General Mechanics Equipment Operating workshop. Come experience the raw power of a 30 ton mining truck, the thrill of an articulated loader, the cool satisfaction of turning the gears in an 18 wheeler. Learn what it takes to keep these "bad boys a rollin" and the limitless opportunities for an exciting career in Heavy Equipment. As Experience Selkirk Day draws closer, brace yourself for the wildest ride any high school student can legally have without parental consent!

Fire Extinguisher Operation: Students will get an introduction into the correct selection and safe use of fire extinguishers, as well as the opportunity to test their newly acquired skills while putting out a liquid fuel fire. As part of this course takes place outside, be sure to dress for the weather.

Introduction to Carpentry: Learn the essentials of the Carpentry trade, and how you can get started in this hands on occupation.  

Introduction to Welding: Visiting students will work with Level “C” Welding students and participate in the different activities associated with the Level “C” Welding program. This will include Arc welding (both stick and wire feed), oxy-acetylene cutting, plasma arc cutting as well as use various types of equipment used in metal fabricating.

Electrical: Home Electricity - Are you in the dark when it comes to the electrical wiring in your house?  Join Dave for a high powered lesson on residential electrical wiring.  Learn how to install or replace switches, receptacles and lighting fixtures easily and safely in your home.

Esthetics: See our salon in action! Learn about the world of Esthetics and the possibilities for advancement and employment in this fascinating field. Demonstrations in nail and skin care will be included.

Hairdressing: Love to design and style hair? Learn what it takes to become a hairdresser! Demonstrations in hair care and design will be included.

Taking better Photographs with your Digital Camera: Learn how to take pictures like a pro! Explore composition, texture and colors, and experience what it takes to create that perfect picture. *Students MUST bring their own camera.

How to Flambe: Impress your friends and parents. Learn to flambe a fantastic dessert using saute pans and a small gas stove. Come prepared for a sweet treat!

Music and the Metronome: Rhythm is one of the basic fundamentals of music. Learn to practice with a metronome. Bring your musical instrument to this workshop!

Sushi: Learn how to wrap the perfect California style sushi, while finding out more information about this yummy career in the cooking industry.

How We Think & Remember: Good thinking and memory skill don't come naturally to people; they have to be understood and practiced to be effective. This session examines how to put your brain in the right gears to get specific results that can benefit us in life and in school.

Magic Carpets: Using hands, heat, soap and water in the making of a small mat, students will experience the transformation of fleece into fabric.

Touching Magical Clay: Try your hand at a potter's wheel. Bring an old shirt or apron and a towel and prepare to get dirty!

Creating a Pendant: Learn the basics of jewellery design. Students will create a beautiful pendant by learning various techniques, such as hammered surface textrures and roller pringing patterns. Students will leave with a one of a kind pendent!

Metal Forging and Pattern Mold Making: Check out this demonstration and try your hand at swinging the hammer on hot steel.

Music and Film: Learn how composers write music for films by listening to music and watching movies. Composer/instructor Don Macdonald will discuss the compositional process in a variety of films of such as, "A Beautiful Mind, Harry Potter movies, Star Wars and others.

Introduction to 3D Modeling and Animation: This is a a quick intro to the 3d modeling and animation industry.  Learn what it takes to become a 3d artist and where a career in 3D can take you.

Graphics in Motion - Introduction to Adobe After Effects: Jump into the fascinating world of motion graphics, animation and visual effects with Adobe After Effects.  

The Party: What type of person are you - realistic? artistic? social? Come explore your personality type and discover some matching occupations in a fun and thought-provoking activity. We'll also talk about how you can get started while still in high school through Selkirk's Transitions Program. Where do you fit in at "The Party"?

Finding Money: Need some cash? This interactive workshop will help you figure out how much money you will need to pay for post-secondary & where to look for it!
