Impact on our community
The renovation of the Tenth Street Residence will impact the community in many ways:
- The retrofit activities which are currently being undertaken at the St. Martin’s and McCarthy Halls (Tenth Street Residence) offer major environmental and social benefits and significant opportunities to employ locally available trades, contractors, consultants and designers. It is estimated that 40-50 people could be working on-site.
- The dorm remodel will revitalize this abandoned building, relieving what has long been an eyesore and source of frustration to those sensitive to Nelson’s housing shortage
- Selkirk Students will find it easier to find suitable housing and this in turn will open more rental units up for those seeking to find a place to live in town.
- The dorm’s population will contribute to the vitality of the neighbourhood. Davies Street Park as well as the existing Svaboda road and GNBR trails system, the utilization of the Fairview bus route and the support of new and existing business in Fairview will be utilized more.
- The renovation work also aims to support real and tangible examples of environmental leadership by obtaining LEED Gold and being a publicly accessible example of a building with geothermal heating system, solar hot water and innovative design for efficiency and occupant health and comfort.
- By incorporation such green building principals and alternative energy installations we hope to inspire change and nurture the next generation of cutting edge creators and innovators.
