The Vision for the Tenth Street Residence

As affordable accomodation becomes more difficult to find in Nelson, B.C., the need to return the St. Martin’s and McCarthy Halls (Tenth Street Residence) to service has been recognized and supported by community members and city officials. The retrofit activities will offer major environmental and social benefits alongside significant opportunities to employ locally available trades, contractors, labourers and consultants.
And, after all is said and done, students of Selkirk College will have a sustainable, affordable place to live.
The following attributes have been included in the final design work:
- Reconfiguration of the facility into 3 and 5 bedroom units which include kitchenette and bath-toilet services;
- Renovated facility will provide accommodation for approximately 100 residents;
- Rehabilitation of the structure to current building standards and beyond with the goal of achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold (examples of features to be considered include solar and micro hydro, geothermal exchange and increased thermal efficiency);
- The planning, construction and the completed facility will offer experiential learning opportunities for Selkirk students.
