I graduated from JV Humpries in Kaslo, BC in 1999. Recently, I wanted to go back to school to have a new career but I was intimidated by being a mature student the the application process to larger schools. At the time, I didn’t picture myself as “university ready," so I started by taking some classes online with Selkirk College and was soon hooked. So, I moved back home to the Kootenay’s to complete my Social Service Worker Certificate. By the time I graduated in 2014, I knew it was the beginning of something bigger.
I refer to my time at Selkirk College as some of the best learning I could have ever received. It was my foundation. The types of classes I was offered had creative assignments, with real exchanges and conversations between interesting people. I had very passionate and engaging teachers. This added a lot of depth and collaboration. It strengthened my desire to learn and motivated me to want excel and do more.
When I completed my certificate I transferred to VIU to do my diploma and then transferred to UVic to finish my bachelor of Social Work degree.
I graduate in April 2016 with my Social Work degree from the University of Victoria. I have been employed in the field as a Housing Support Worker and I have volunteered with hospice, facilitating grief groups and supporting people on the Palliative Care Unit. I am currently finishing up a wonderful practicum placement in the area of adult probation. Social Work is a broad field with a lot of opportunities to serve your community and be involved in social justice initiatives which we need now more than ever!
