Coming to Canada was a dream come true for studies and being informed by some of the previous students in Castlegar that getting a part time job while studying would be a difficult task that was the initial information I received, hence I was bit worried and at the same time bit scared as well. My interaction with people from other cultures in a foreign setting , everything was new but thankfully had a very good Orientation at Selkirk and subsequently got to know people and made some good friends This was followed by the fact that I got a part time job in Shoppers Drug Mart as a cashier which was good to begin with.
Clearing the LPN exam in the very first attempt is the next best thing that has happened and it would have never been possible without the help of the instructors. Starting a job as cashier with a minimum wage and then getting paid more working as care aide was really helpful, as an international student of PG Gerontology is the only course which allows student to get registered as a care aide after completing the first year of the studies.
Selkirk College has provided all the resources and help available for student to learn about the Canadian educational system. They also have one to one approach for students. It is really amazing that after completing one year of my Gerontology programme I have a BC care aide registration as well as cleared my LPN and once I get my licence in the due course, I will be a registered licensed practical nurse in Canada which would have never been possible without the curriculum support and guidance from the instructors and the resource materials from the college.
