Criteria

In Conjunction with the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College and in Recognition of Doukhobor and Tolstoyan Ideals, the Peace and Human Rights Award promotes the ideals of peace, international and local unity, and the dignity of work and service on behalf of humanity.

The award will be presented to a Selkirk College student in good standing who has maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA in a minimum of two courses and who meets the following criteria.

The student must submit materials, written or otherwise, in which the applicant or nominee identifies their:

  • Involvement with peace and human rights issues in the College and broader community.
  • Leadership, initiative and commitment in peace and human rights activities.
  • Innovative approaches in creating an increased awareness of peace and human rights issues.
  • Students must provide two references and may be required to attend an interview.

In addition to the above criteria, award selection may be influenced in given years by peace and social projects which are future-oriented, and carried out in the community or in the world (in these instances, award monies may be used in part for travel, project development, and necessary materials).

The award is given in memory of those who once lived on the Mir lands – Indigenous peoples and Doukhobors – and in particular one of the last Mir residents, Christine Faminoff, whose life actions exemplified Doukhobor ideals of “toil and peaceful life."
