CEWT Health & Safety Updates
Read through the following information or get more information at our general Selkirk College Health & Safety: Covid-19 page.
First Aid - Your Safety First
What this means for First Aid right now:
- The mandatory mask policy at Selkirk College is variable based on current orders from the Provincial Health Officer. Check here for current rules.
- Proof of vaccination is not a requirement to study at Selkirk College. This applies to all campus and learning centres. Courses conducted at alternate locations may be subject to current Public Health Orders, applicable to the venue.
- No more screening questionnaires – but we still ask that people not come to a class if they are ill and an instructor can ask someone with symptoms of illness to leave
- We will continue with the higher levels of sanitation and students will be provided with PPE (gloves, disposable masks, their own disposable one-way CPR valve).
WorkSafe BC Certification Update
As British Columbia begins to open its doors, accessibility to first aid training will increase across the province. It is the expectation that those with expired certificates will seek recertification as soon as safe training is available.
Meanwhile, to further accommodate physical distancing and safe practices, WorkSafeBC has extended certificates that have an expiry date between March 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020. These certificates will now be acceptable in the workplace for 180 days beyond their original expiry date. If you are unable to recertify immediately, please view these OFA Level 1 videos here, to brush up on your skills. You may find the first aid reference manual here. Certificates will not be reprinted.
First Aid Attendants and employers do not need to take any actions to qualify for the extensions. WorkSafeBC will continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and recommendations put forth by federal and provincial agencies, and should additional extensions be required we will release further information and direction at that time.
Red Cross Certification Update
To accommodate the ongoing COVID-19 situation and the impact on in-person training, we have re-evaluated our position regarding First Aid recertification (participant levels). Further to the information shared in September, please note the following update: participant-level certificate holders with certifications that expire between March 1, 2020 and March 1, 2021 can attend a recertification course until March 31, 2021.
This extended window will allow those with expired certifcations the opportunity to recertify as facilities reopen and training resumes. For further information visit myrc.redcross.ca.
