From novice to professional, this course helps people of all abilities improve their fiddle, guitar and/or piano skills. A number of prominent instructors help you build your skills, including Nova Scotia's Gord Stobbe - back by popular demand.
Offered in partnership with the Kootenay Fiddlers...
Players of all skill levels are always welcome, from those who have never held a fiddle before to advanced players with many years of experience. In the past we have had a wide range of age groups, and usually keep age groups and skill levels together.
There are classes for fiddle, guitar and piano accompaniment, plus a variety of workshops on related topics such as stepdancing, harmony, vocals, and What To Play When You Don’t Know The Tune. In the evenings there will be events such as a family-friendly Old Time Dance, an instructor lead jam session at Millenium Park in Castlegar, a student concert and an instructors concert at Gyro Park.
The music is based upon East Coast Old Time Fiddling. Our primary instructor, Gordon Stobbe, is a Master Fiddler and Order of Canada recipient who hails from the East Coast and instructs at workshops around the country. Several other first-rate instructors will join Gord for this year’s Fiddle Workshop. Read more...
As for accommodation, there will be dorm rooms available through the college, several local camp grounds and many hotels. Selkirk College provides cafeteria services, and it’s an easy five-minute drive to restaurants in downtown Castlegar.
Classes are designed for learning and fun. Please feel free to bring a recording device to keep track of all the tunes you will hear.
Camp runs from July 8 to 12 from 9 am - 4 pm (5 sessions).
