On April 23, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the rights of the Sinixt (Sn̓ʕay̓čkstx) people under Section 35.1 of Canada’s constitution are affirmed and protected. This effectively sets aside the Canadian government’s declaration in 1956 that the Sinixt First Nation and its people were extinct. Selkirk College appreciates the path to reconciliation this decision has secured.
This very exciting and positive news will further strengthen the working relationship Selkirk College has with the Sinixt community, the Colville Confederated Tribes government, and our many Sinixt friends and colleagues on both sides of the border. As an educational institution that is so grateful to operate on the traditional territories of the Sinixt nation, Selkirk College is excited to continue our work to support Sinixt learners, families and communities to build remarkable futures together, and continue the work of meaningful and lasting reconciliation.
