After high school I did just that and moved to Banff when I was 18. Back in Collingwood I worked as a ski instructor/freestyle ski coach throughout my childhood and living in Banff I worked at Sunshine Village on Trail Crew. Moving out west literally changed my life and I was immediately introduced to the amazing mountain lifestyle and got to meet tons of international travellers from around the globe.
I attended the SROAM program the following year mainly because my biggest passion in life is skiing and I love working in the industry. I've always been the type of person to follow my passions in life and work in an environment where I'm happy and enjoy the people I'm surrounded by. The SROAM program could not have been a better fit. Everyone in the program were very like-minded and we instantly become a SROAMie family! Funny enough, we still are as we meet this weekend for our 6th annual ThanksGIVER gathering in Nelson! The SROAM program gave me an overview of all the different departments associated with running a ski resort and taught us lots about the business and legal side of things. One of my favourite programs was the Events Management course where our main project was to execute a community wide event that the entire class was apart of. We created the SROAMazing Race and sure enough it's now an annual event put on by the first year SROAMies!
Once I graduated from SROAM I worked at Revelstoke Mountain Resort for two seasons as the Senior Sales Representative for the ROC (Revelstoke Outdoors Centre). After that I moved to Australia for a year and upon returning I got offered the position at Castle Mountain as their Sales & Marketing Coordinator. Since then, I've worked at Treble Cone Ski Area in Wanaka, NZ as the Head Freeski Coach and now I am going into my third year at RED Mountain as their Events Coordinator. So, you can probably tell I can't really sit still, but all of this experience has got me to where I am today and I could not be anymore stoked! The SROAM program is internationally recognized (trust me, in New Zealand they knew about it) and I've met a lot of very successful SROAMie graduates throughout my years in the industry. The SROAM program allowed me to meet a wide variety of people in the industry and now I have connections at virtually all resorts in Canada. The program is an amazing gateway to getting your foot in the door, meeting like-minded people and seeing which area of the ski industry best suits you. And, yeah the instructors are pretty rad too...once a hardcore ski bum, always a hardcore ski bum!
In the future I'd love to grow with RED Mountain and seek future opportunities within the organization. One of my main goals moving forward is to teach the SROAM program, as I hope to accomplish this in the near future if the opportunity arises!
Have a look at my Valedictorian Speech from Selkirk College as I grasp the whole experience in a nutshell.
You might also recognize me from Team GIVE'R on the Amazing Race Canada! I truly believe one of the main reasons we got chosen is because of the unique lifestyle we live and that we choose lifestyle over luxury.
Follow your passions and you will go far in life!
But most importunately...GIVE'R!
