Selkirk College’s Contemporary Music and Technology Program is celebrating graduating student Cris Cirin, who has been awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Through Selkirk College’s transfer pathway with Berklee College, Cirin will enter directly into the third year of the renowned program this September.

Reflecting on their experience at Selkirk College, Cirin credits the people behind the program. “Every instructor was genuine, supportive and actively involved in the industry,” says Cirin. “The program gave me real-world experience and was extremely supportive of my unique musical background and goals.”

Originally from Vancouver, Cirin developed as a singer and multi-instrumentalist before coming to Selkirk College to focus on production and performance.

“Cris’s achievement speaks to the calibre of talent in this program,” says Selkirk College President Maggie Matear. “It’s so rewarding to see students get opportunities that reflect not only their dedication but also the strength of their training.”

The Contemporary Music and Technology Program has produced several notable graduates, including pop artist Kiesza, JUNO Award-winning composer Keiko Devaux, screen composer Amanda Cawley, multi-instrumentalist Austin Parachoniak (The Sheepdogs), drummer Leon Power (City and Colour) and guitarist Tom Samulak (Tanya Tucker).

Hands-On Training, Mentorship and Collaboration

Now entering its 37th year, the program is recognized for its hands-on training, close mentorship and a collaborative learning environment that helps students grow as artists and professionals. It provides a world-class educational experience anchored by a profound sense of community and has served as a premier destination for musicians, producers, and composers.

Graduates move directly into the industry, building careers across Canada or choosing to remain in the Kootenays, working as performers, composers, producers, educators, music therapists and entrepreneurs.

“One of the things we see again and again is students finding their lane while they’re here,” says Melody Diachun, chair of Selkirk College’s School of Arts and Technology. “With guidance from faculty and space to explore what matters to them, they’re able to carry that momentum into what comes next.”

Selkirk College’s Arts and Technology programs, including Contemporary Music and Technology, Digital Arts, and Digital Fabrication and Design, are currently accepting applications for the upcoming academic year.
