In observance of Transgender Awareness Week on November 13–19 and the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, the transgender pride flag has been raised at campuses throughout the region.
This week is an opportunity, writes the advocacy organization GLAAD, “to bring attention to the trans community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect the transgender community.”
The flag speaks to Selkirk College’s dedication to creating an environment that celebrates diversity and a culture of inclusion for all.
“Selkirk College acknowledges the importance of Transgender Awareness Week and the Transgender Day of Awareness as an important part of the continuing efforts to dismantle false narratives of transgendered people who are our neighbours, friends and students,” says Brier Albano, associate vice-president, student success. “We mourn the loss of transgendered individuals who have fallen to violence and raise awareness to ensure that we remember the need to change and grow in acceptance and community.”
