This training is designed to support social service and community-based non-profits in building strong, effective Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committees that reflect the realities of frontline, people-centred work. Delivered in alignment with the Workers Compensation Act (WCA) Division 4 and applicable regulations, the course meets required training and annual evaluation expectations while emphasizing practical skills, collaboration, and psychological safety.
Participants explore the role of the Joint Committee within environments where staff may be supporting individuals experiencing trauma, crisis, mental health challenges, or complex social needs. The training recognizes that workplace hazards in social services extend beyond physical risks and include psychological, emotional, ergonomic, and environmental hazards common to community care settings.
Through guided discussion, real-world examples, and interactive group learning, participants build confidence in their roles and practise how to apply OH&S requirements in ways that are realistic, compassionate, and effective. The course focuses on shared responsibility, respectful communication, and problem-solving approaches that strengthen trust between workers and employers while improving safety outcomes for staff, volunteers, and clients.
Participants will develop skills to:
- Understand the purpose and responsibilities of Joint Committees within a community-based organization
- Navigate the Right to Refuse Unsafe Work process with clarity and care
- Conduct and document inspections, incident investigations, and risk assessments relevant to social service environments
- Identify and address physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychological
- Strengthen committee effectiveness through inclusive meeting practices, clear documentation, and meaningful communication
- Evaluate committee performance, identify barriers, and develop achievable short- and long-term safety goals
This course is well-suited for frontline workers, supervisors, managers, and volunteers serving on JOHS Committees in social services, non-profits, and community organizations who want to move beyond compliance toward a culture of shared responsibility, care, and prevention.
