The TESOL program is currently undergoing a review and applications are no longer being accepted for September 2021
TESOL Advanced Diploma
Students complete 18 credits (250 hours of methodology coursework) plus a 20-hour practicum which includes 10 hours of observation and 10 hours of practice teaching in one of Selkirk’s skill-based, multicultural ESL classrooms.
Students who hold a degree and meet the language requirements and have Selkirk’s TESOL Advanced Diploma are eligible for TESL Canada Professional 1 Certification.
For those interested in TESL Canada Professional 2 Certification, Selkirk College offers an additional Extended Practicum (usually over 8 weeks) which includes an additional 20 hours of observation and 10 hours of teaching in one of Selkirk’s skill-based, multicultural ESL classrooms.
This extended practicum is normally offered during the winter semester after the completion of the TESOL Diploma, and there is an additional cost for this extended practicum.
TESL Advanced Certificate
Students complete 14 credits (220 hours of methodology) but do not participate in the practicum component.
Students who are enrolled in the TESL Advanced Certificate program and wish to add on a Practicum may do so if they meet prerequisites of the TESOL Advanced Diploma program and provide necessary paper work, including written approval from the School Chair.
This process must be initiated and approved prior to awarding the TESL Advanced Certificate. At such time, students will be re-enrolled as an Advanced Diploma candidate. Students who have successfully completed the TESL Advanced Certificate program and awarded a certificate and wish to add on a Practicum must meet the standards above and students will be awarded a Practicum Letter to recognize their teaching and observation hours.
Students who hold a TESL Advanced Certificate and Practicum Letter are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Professional 1 Certification. There is an additional charge to add a practicum to a certificate program.
An international teaching practicum experience provides students with an opportunity to live and teach in an international setting with the support of Selkirk College. During their practicum students will apply the theories and methods studied in the Selkirk College TESOL Program in a work environment.
Please Note: TSOL120 is an additional practicum for graduates of the Selkirk College TESOL Advanced Diploma Program. It is not a requirement for graduation. This course may not be offered every year. Enrolment is limited.
Selkirk currently has partnerships with schools/organizations in Japan and Mexico. We hope to have even more opportunities available in the near future.
